RECENT REELS:

RUTH LAWRENCE - DIRECTOR

Ruth Lawrence is a powerhouse multi-hyphenate: actress, writer, producer, director and beloved community leader here in St. John’s. Her feature film directorial debut Little Orphans was an Official Selection at the FIN Atlantic International Film Festival, the St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival and the Whistler Film Festival, where it won the Borsos Competition for Best Canadian Film. The film was also nominated for the Directors Guild of Canada's DGC Discovery Award. Since then, she’s directed her sophomore feature film Party Pirate and helmed various short form series, from drama to comedy, music videos to children’s programming.

It was a fun challenge to create this demo reel as Ruth’s work is so diverse in tone and type. After looking at all of her work, the immediate shiny thread for me was the scene in Little Orphans after the wedding, with the sisters sitting one by one to an intimate song and a short snippet from one of her earliest short films Talus and Scree, where two young girls wait out the minutes of their sisters funeral reception, hiding under a piano as mourners walk by. The moments in this demo highlight Ruth’s interesting visual perspectives, great sense of humour and touch for poignant intimacy.

RENÉE HACKETT - ACTRESS

Check out this reel I curated for Actress, Writer and Producer Renée Hackett. Renée is a wonderful actress with a wide range of material, showcasing her awesome character work and striking vulnerability. This was Renée’s first demo reel and I’m so thankful she trusted me to curate it!

CHERYL POIRIER - ACTRESS

Cheryl is an Actress and Comedian who was looking to create a dynamic demo and when we went through her work in our one-on-one meeting, she had a copy of a PSA that she didn’t think belonged in a traditional demo reel. Her work in the piece was compelling and the tone and quality of the piece really inspired me. And she was right: it didn’t work as a scene, but it created a perfect set of bookends to contrast her great comedic work.

JEN POGUE - ACTRESS

Jen Pogue is an Actress, Producer, Host and Advocate who had lots of material to choose from and I really enjoyed building a fun narrative for the reel as a cohesive piece. Jen’s variety of roles show lots of range and she has a truly infectious fun spirit, which I think comes through in this reel. We are next going to curate a hosting and animation demo for Jen in order to highlight her other work!
